Imerovigli Greece

Imerovigli is a village perched on a cliff overlooking the island of Santorini and its volcanic calderas. You can watch the sunset from the terraces of its elegant bars, refined restaurants and exclusive boutique hotels, some of which are located in caves. Hikers can follow the Ekklisia Theoskepasti trail, which passes through the ruins of the 13th-century Venetian castle of Skaros to the top of the iconic rock of the same name, home to the Church of Theoskepasti (famous for its blue dome). Imerovigli was born as a fortress, as its name suggests, Imera (day) and viglia (watchtower) a watchtower that enjoyed a strategic position from which it could control the arrival of unwanted pirates by being safe at a height of 300 metres. According to the archives, the occupation of the area dates back to the end of the 16th century, although according to the testimony of the cartographer Boundelmonti, the fortress already existed on this site in 1421.
